That’s the energy sector’s one-year return on the S&P/TSX Canadian index.

December 22, 2022

As of December 15, the Canadian energy sector posted a year-over-year return of about 44% on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Not every Canadian stock market sector did that well, however. For example, from December 15, 2021, to December 15, 2022, the financial sector declined by about  16%, real estate by 23%, IT by 36%, and the health sector by 50%.

The energy sector’s performance is partly responsible for the fact that the Canadian index as a whole returned about -9% for the same period, while in the U.S., the S&P 500 Index posted a loss of almost 16%. The weight of the energy sector in the S&P/TSX Canadian index is about 18%.
