Understanding your investment statement in 60 seconds

Your investment statement contains a wealth of information about your portfolio status. Here’s how to get the most out of it in just 60 seconds.

Your investment statement contains a wealth of information about your portfolio status. Here’s how to get the most out of it in just 60 seconds.

First, you will notice that your statement includes two levels of information.

The first level provides an overview: a summary of your portfolio, its allocation across the different asset classes such as bond funds and equity funds, and a summary of the activity in your account (investments and withdrawals) during the financial period.

So, if you just want to know whezre you stand and how your situation has changed in the last period, you can stick to this level of information.

For more specific information, go to the second, more detailed level of the portfolio. Each of your accounts has two sections: your investment details and transaction details.

In the investment details, you will find all the investments in your account, including their book value and market value. When you sell fund units, your capital gain or loss will be calculated on the basis of these book and market values.

The transaction details section lists each of your transactions: your buys and sales, but also, if applicable, the capital gain, dividend or interest distributions paid by your mutual funds.

There you have it—your investment statement in 60 seconds!

One last point: At the beginning of the year, you will also receive two additional reports: one on your performance and the other on the charges and compensation associated with your portfolio.

Please contact your advisor for any questions about these reports and your investment statement.
